RALEIGH, N.C. -- A former Raleigh city councilman has organized a coalition dedicated to restraining government acquisition of private land.

The North Carolina Property Rights Coalition plans to start by trying to get a constitutional amendment on the ballot. Kieran Shanahan, the group's chairman, says the coalition hopes to act as an umbrella organization for businesses, individuals and other groups concerned about eminent domain and forced annexation issues.

Eminent domain concerns have increased since a U.S. Supreme Court ruling last year that allowed a Connecticut town to take houses on property that would be used for a hotel and convention center.
